Generation Alpha

Generation Alpha, born from 2013 through 2024, is the first cohort born entirely in the 21st century and is growing up in a world where artificial intelligence, voice assistants, tablets, and constant connectivity are simply baseline realities rather than innovations. Raised primarily by Millennial parents who were themselves digital pioneers, Alphas are expected to be the most formally educated and materially advantaged generation in history, though concerns persist regarding attention spans, screen time effects, and social development in an increasingly digital environment. Their social lives are mediated through gaming platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, which serve as virtual playgrounds where they socialize, create, and explore in ways previous generations conducted entirely in physical spaces.

They are growing up witnessing rapid AI advancement, climate change effects, pandemic disruption to education, and social movements for racial and gender justice, shaping their worldview in still-unknown ways. Alphas are globally connected from birth, exposed to diverse perspectives and cultures through their devices, and are already influencing household spending decisions through their early development of consumer preferences. Educational approaches are being redesigned around their learning styles, which include visual literacy, multitasking across platforms, and preference for interactive rather than passive content.

The oldest Alphas have already experienced educational disruption through COVID-19 remote learning, while the youngest will have no memory of the pandemic but will live with its lasting impacts on education and social norms.
