Zalphas (Cusp)

2010-2015

Zalphas are the emerging cusp generation that bridges the gap between Generation Z and Generation Alpha, typically born between 2010 and 2015. These children arrived alongside the release of the iPad in 2010 and the explosion of streaming services, making them the first group to never know a world without on-demand, touch-screen entertainment and instant access to any content they desire. They are the 'middle children' of the 2010s, caught between the smartphone-centric world of Gen Z and the fully AI-integrated reality that awaits Gen Alpha.

Their educational and social development was significantly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic during their early elementary years, typically between kindergarten and fifth grade, creating lasting impacts on their learning patterns, social skills, and adaptability that distinguish them from both older and younger cohorts. Unlike Gen Alpha, who will grow up entirely in a post-pandemic 'new normal,' Zalphas have foggy but real memories of life before lockdowns, giving them a unique perspective on the dramatic shift to remote interaction, masked socialization, and virtual learning. As children of predominantly Millennial parents, they are being raised with heavy emphasis on emotional intelligence, therapeutic language, and digital literacy, with parents who are both concerned about screen time and resigned to its inevitability.

Zalphas are experiencing childhood in the mature phase of social media, where their parents and older siblings have already worked out many norms and dangers, giving them earlier awareness of online safety and digital citizenship than previous generations received.

The Influencers

  • Ryan Kaji — YouTube star whose toy reviews and kids' content empire has dominated children's entertainment throughout Zalpha childhood, representing the generation's early exposure to content creation.
  • Charli D'Amelio — TikTok star who rose to fame when Zalphas were young children, representing the older influencers they aspire to emulate and the short-form video content defining their media consumption.
  • Bluey (Character) — Australian animated dog whose show has become a cultural phenomenon for Zalphas and their Millennial parents, modeling emotional intelligence and family relationships.
  • MrBeast — YouTuber whose challenges, philanthropy, and massive production values set expectations for content quality and generosity among Zalpha viewers.
  • North West — Kim Kardashian's daughter who has grown up in the public eye throughout Zalpha's childhood, representing celebrity kids who influence fashion and trends through their parents' platforms.

The Slang

  • Slay: Do something excellently (inherited from older generations) (Drag culture term that remained popular through Zalpha's childhood via TikTok and YouTube exposure)
  • Sus: Suspicious, questionable (Popularized by 'Among Us' game in 2020 during pandemic, became central to Zalpha playground vocabulary)
  • Vibe: Atmosphere, feeling, or to agree with something (Older term that became everyday Zalpha vocabulary through constant social media usage)
  • Fire: Excellent, amazing (Continued from Gen Z into Zalpha vocabulary as general term for anything impressive)
  • Lit: Exciting, awesome (Inherited from Millennials/Gen Z, maintained in Zalpha speech through older siblings and content creators)
  • Bet: Okay, sounds good, agreement (Gen Z term adopted by older Zalphas through social media and school influence)
  • Cap: Lie, falsehood (saying 'no cap' means 'no lie') (Gen Z slang that Zalphas learned early through TikTok and YouTube content)
  • Rizz: Charisma, especially romantic appeal (early adoption) (Gen Z term that oldest Zalphas are beginning to adopt as they approach teen years)
